  BIOGRAPHY

Born in Launceston, Tasmania, Mezzo Soprano Courtney Pitman was singing before she could talk. Her earliest musical education was gained through The Salvation Army where she was a member of the Singing Company and Young People’s Band playing the cornet and then French horn. As a teenager she was featured as soloist on a Channel 9 Christmas Advertisement and on the CD recording "Music from St Mary’s".

After commencing a music performance degree on the French Horn at the University of Western Australia, Courtney realised that singing was her true passion. She auditioned for the WA Opera and was accepted as a member of the chorus at just 20 years of age. She continues to perform with WA Opera as a chorus member and also had the opportunity to understudy the role of Rosina in their 2008 production of Il Barbiere di Sivig. The same year, she performed the role of Irma in a workshop of scenes from newly composed opera Picnic at Hanging Rock. In 2009 she toured Western Australia with the WA Opera in Education Program, performing at schools throughout the metropolitan and Great Southern regions to introduce opera to K-12 students. She also mentored students taking part in the intensive program during the Great Southern tour.

Courtney commenced performing with the nationally renowned St George’s Cathedral Choir in 2009 as both a chorister and as a soloist in their annual concert series. In these concerts she has worked with Conductor Joseph Nolan and performed alongside internationally acclaimed soloists such as Sara Macliver, Taryn Fiebig, Paul McMahon and Andrew Foote. She has performed some of the greatest sacred choral works ever composed such as The Messiah (Handel), Mass in C Minor (Mozart), Requiem Mass (Mozart) and St John’s Passion (Bach). She was also selected from the choir to perform the alto solos in Haydn’s The Creation when St George’s joined together with The Academy of Ancient Music under the direction of Richard Egarr. Courtney will feature as “The Mouse” in Benjamin Britten’s Rejoice in the Lamb on the upcoming release of the choir’s latest recording for ABC Classics.

Courtney has also performed as soloist with Collegium Symphonic Chorus for Beethoven’s Mass in C and Choral Fantasy and performed the role of Buttercup for The Gilbert & Sullivan Society of WA’s concert performance on HMS Pinafore. She was a soloist in John Milson’s musical theatre review A Little Light Music for the same company. She performed the role of Claire in Omnibus Productions The Secret Garden and performed with Lesley Garret and Anthony Warlow at The Leeuwin Estate Concert Series.
